The specifics remain undefined what these assurances would take, but the Ukrainian leader has been pushing for "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, inspired by Nato’s core tenet that an attack on one member should be seen as an attack on all.

Conditions for Russian Talks

Separately, Zelenskyy informed journalists that a direct engagement with Moscow would be conceivable after the Washington and its European partners agreed on a Ukraine-proposed peace plan to end the war.

This statement comes following Donald Trump stated publicly that he believed a three-way discussion between Russia, Ukraine and the US could happen when conditions are suitable.

Previous Interaction

The Ukrainian and Russian presidents have been without a summit since the end of 2019. That previous engagement, brokered by the leaders of France and Germany, aimed to revive efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict.

More recently, in May 2025, the Kremlin leader refused to go to Istanbul for discussions with Zelenskyy, rejecting a bold proposal to talk about ending the war in Istanbul.

Unresolved Land Disputes

A key point of contention continues to be the status of the Donbas area in eastern Ukraine. Trump said that a suggestion to turn the region, which is mostly under Russian control, into a DMZ is still not settled.

Trump further commented that it will become clear in a matter of weeks whether the conflict can be concluded.

The leaders have emphasized that the lengthy peace talks would persist as they aim to achieve a final resolution to the protracted hostilities.
