European football's governing body has initiated formal action concerning Chelsea's Pedro Neto following an incident where he pushed over a sideline assistant during the Champions League defeat against PSG.

The 26-year-old, Neto, pushed the attendant in stoppage time of the knockout stage fixture in Paris – where his team suffered a heavy defeat – an action that led to him to fall off a chair.

The incident triggered a heated exchange involving both sets of players.

The governing body confirmed action has been taken against the player on grounds of "conduct contrary to sporting spirit" as per UEFA's code.

"Disciplinary officials will decide regarding this matter in due course," European football's governing body announced.

Neto apologised for the incident and blamed being caught up "in the emotion of the game" while he was attempting to regain possession of the ball.

"I'm not like this. It was in the heat of the moment and I offer my apologies. I gave him my shirt. I feel terrible about it - an apology is necessary," Neto explained to broadcasters.

"I don't speak French well, so teammate Vitinha came over and explained to him I was not like this.

"At the end he accepted the apology and I presented him with my jersey and said sorry many times. He realized it was a mistake and was content with the outcome."

Chelsea face Paris St-Germain next Tuesday for the return fixture, after a match against Newcastle to Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the Premier League.
