With an announcement that combines generosity with stringent conditions, the United States has pledged $2 billion for UN humanitarian programmes. But, this aid came with a blunt message for the international body: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Significant Announcement During Broader Budget Reductions
The funding announcement was made against a backdrop of substantial cuts in US funding for global aid. Additional reductions are also anticipated from other major contributors including European nations. The official, a senior Trump administration figure, made the statement alongside the United Nations' top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will save millions of lives," affirmed the UN's humanitarian chief. However, this amount represents only a fraction of the United States' traditional contributions, which were estimated at around $17 billion in the recent past.
Aid Accompanied by Specific Conditions
The latest American assistance comes with unconditional. The money is focused on a select group of 17 countries, including Syria, Sudan, and Haiti. Notably, Yemen and Afghanistan are explicitly denied funding.
