The Former President's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
