Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
