Australia will enact laws mandating digital services to allocate a minimum percentage of revenue in local content, as announced by official statements on Tuesday.

Platforms including Netflix along with additional providers that have 1M subscribers will need to allocate a minimum of ten percent of their Australian spending alternatively 7.5% of income on local productions.

Legislation will be introduced to lawmakers this week and will apply to arts and educational content.

Government ministers announced the move is designed to protect production jobs in the industry. Streaming services are yet to commented publicly.

'Extraordinary shows'

"There are Australian content requirements on free-to-air television and pay television, but until now, we lacked no guarantee of viewing our own stories on streaming services," a government representative stated.

"Since their introduction in Australia, streaming services have produced numerous remarkable series. This obligation will ensure such productions – Australian content – continue to be made."

According to sources, legislation will be introduced to legislators in the coming days.

These updated production obligations were originally scheduled implemented by July last year but concerns over how they would interact with international trade pacts with the US led to the initiative being delayed.

The government cited challenges conducting negotiations with the US during their an election.

After President Trump was elected, concerns emerged about whether the rules might prompt the US administration to implement retaliatory tariffs against Australia.

Now, with the dust settled, amid improved relations internationally, these regulations have returned for consideration.

While industry groups applauded the announcement, streamers are still to issue statements on the matter.

Previously, digital services published a report highlighting their cultural and financial impact on the national entertainment sector.

Nonetheless, it was seen by some as strategic positioning in anticipation of coming legislation.

Industry decline

Current local productions on streaming platforms include multiple programs across different genres.

Like many countries, Australia's creative industries experienced challenges recently, partly because of the production slump throughout the health crisis.

In the financial year 2023-24, investment in feature films and television dramas produced domestically fell by almost one-third, according to industry data.
