2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Lead to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Change Comes After Lukewarm Response
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had shown the requirement for a distinct direction.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised focus, aiming to address player expectations.
Trend of Key Recruitment
The news mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete message from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the necessity for a clearer vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to mind and revamped the title with a renewed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. Following several months of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.
His management and background in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having devoted the recent years developing and managing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all excited to keep seeing the development of the game in the time to come.
David
